Artisan Outdoor: Singe Threads

This time round we have Cloe from Singe Threads give us an insight into what her life looks like hopping between Australia and the US doing snow seasons, creating fibre art pieces along the way.

Hi there! Could you introduce yourself and what you do for the readers?

Hello! I'm good how're you?

My name's Cloe, I do snowmaking and Grooming year round, at Perisher and Deer Valley, which is in Park City Utah. I am also a fibre artist on the side, selling (mostly beanies) crochet pieces.

Can you share what life is like living between AUS and the US doing ski seasons? What is challenging? What is rewarding?

Doing back to back winters between Aus and the US is so fun! Skiing is my number 1 passion and I'm so lucky I get to do it year round! The most challenging part is having to move every 6 months, it's getting super tiring and I'm sick of having only a suitcase and ski bag worth of possessions. I also don't get to see my cat while I'm in the States. The most rewarding things are definitely the travel I get to do for work and like I said before, the skiing!!

How did you start Singe Threads? And where do you find your inspiration for your designs?

I started crocheting during COVID since I needed a new indoor hobby and fell in love! I was crocheting so much that I couldn't keep all the beanies myself! So I started an Instagram page and off I went! I draw a lot of my inspiration from friends and places around me! I find I go through phases of super grungey looking beanies to loud colour combos. Honestly I mostly make things that I would want, and then sell them.

How do you source materials for crotchet pieces? Are there any specific things you like to look for in yarn?

I mostly source from local yarn shops and op-shops! Op shops have a huge amount of yarn! I always use natural fibres to try and not add to the huge acrylic yarn consumption. They also last longer and are warmer!

How has your experience as a woman been in the snow industry? Is there anything you're excited about?

Being a woman in the mountain operations department can definitely have it's challenges. (I'm sure you all know what they are...people doubting your ability to drive heavy machinery as a woman, etc) But even in the years I've been doing it it's come such a long way! I'm in quite a few group chats and Facebook pages with other women in the industry where we can vent and what not! The growth within these groups has been exponential and it's so nice to have safe spaces of women supporting women 💘

Finally, are there any creatives you'd like to shoutout?

Is it ok if I say you?! Schusser threads is so cool! I love your ethical devotion and your top quality products! I truly look up to you as a creator!!
